The American Civil War - 876 Words

The American Civil War, which occurred between 1861 and 1865, pitted the Union North against the Confederate South. Between 1835 and 1877, there was another Civil War occurring within the United States. The other Civil War involved pitting the rich against the poor. One of the most important assertions Zinn makes involves these struggles: In these books, given to millions of young Americans, there is little on class struggle in the nineteenth century. The period before and after the Civil War is filled with politics, elections, slavery, and the race question. Workers banded together for the first time, as they felt they were being treated unjustly. They demanded higher wages and a ten-hour workday. The Lowell Girls Movement was st ressed in this chapter, as Zinn really illustrated the plight of the Lowell girls. The Lowell system was controlled by rules and regulations, and young girls would work in the mills and live in dormitories that were prisonlike. They had extreme work hours, waking up at four in the morning and working until seven thirty at night, and they were fed scraps. Women began protesting and organized a Factory Girls’ Association, which ended up going on strike. They held out for about a month, but they ultimately ran out of money and were forced to return to work. The last big movement was the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. It began with lower wages ($1.75 a day for brakemen working 12 hours), deaths and injuries among workers (loss of limbs and the crushing of men between cars), and scheming by the railroad companies. Strikes broke out at the Baltimore Ohio station, Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania Railroad, Harrisburg, St. Louis, and had even made the news in Europe.
